European Union

72-hour goal

National, with limits

3

days

Read thisThe EU is an institution, not a country. The guidelines were still being written on 13 October 2026, and member states set their own advice.

The EU's 72 hours comes from its March 2025 Preparedness Union Strategy, which commits the Commission to guidelines helping member states reach population self-sufficiency of at least 72 hours. It is a goal for member states, not a direct instruction to households.

“In case of extreme disruptions, the initial period is the most critical. The Commission will propose guidelines for Member States to reach population self-sufficiency of at least 72 hours.”
